Can I cut on my granite countertop?
Yes, but you could ruin your good knives. Granite is harder than your knife blade
and will dull it quickly.
Can my granite countertop be damaged?
High impact blows can harm granite. Unsealed granite can absorb stains such as oil,
which can cause dark spots or discoloration.
How do I clean my granite?
Granite is 95-98% stain resistant, but we still use a silicone impregnator on all
of our stone products. Polished granite and marble should be cleaned by using mild
biodegradable dish soap. This should be followed by rinsing and drying with dry,
cotton cloths. The old rule of thumb is never use anything you wouldn’t use on your
hands. This includes not using abrasive pads for cleaning, powder cleansers, or
any acidic cleaners. Many stone cleaning products are available at local retail
outlets.
Can I set my hot pan on my granite countertop?
Absolutely. Because granite is formed by extreme heat and pressure beneath the earth’s
crust, it will not be affected by heat from a cook top or frying pan. If exposed
to an open flame, your granite will show no burns or scars.
What is the difference between granite
and marble?
The primary difference is that granite is an extremely dense material formed deep
inside the earth’s core. Conversely, marble is formed from sediments under the seabed.
Both solidify after millions of years, but granite is harder and better suited for
high use areas.
What is the appropriate thickness for
a countertop?
There is an abundance of misinformation regarding the desirability of 2 centimeter
versus 3 centimeter thick material. Certain thicknesses accommodate different edge
detail more cost effectively, but your concern should not be about thickness as
much as the aesthetic beauty of your countertop’s flat surface and edge detail.
We sell and fabricate both thicknesses as it best applies to your needs.
Is marble suitable for kitchen countertops?
No. Marble is not as dense as granite and therefore does not have the durability
under heavy use. Marble can be used for many applications like fireplace surrounds,
tabletops, bath surrounds, vanities, floor, and showers. Use marble in lower traffic
areas. Since ancient times, marble has been used in all areas of the home exhibiting
great durability.
What other considerations are there when
deciding on granite or marble?
Because granite and marble are natural stones, they have been blessed with natural
movement and beauty in the design. The unpredictability of the pattern and movement
in the stone is what sophisticated, discerning customers are looking for. Customers
who are less acquainted with natural stone must be aware that these natural products
may differ from samples taken from slabs or from photographs. Even single slabs
of stone may have variations in color and veining from one end of the slab to the
other. These irregularities add to the natural beauty and artistry inherent to granite
and marble.
